It is a by-product of the Solvay process for the preparation of Sodium Carbonate:
Ca (OH) 2 + 2 NH4Cl → CaCl2 + 2 NH3 + 2 H2O
It can also be prepared by the direct reaction of calcium carbonate or limestone and hydrochloric acid:
CaCO3 (s) + 2 HCl (aq) → CaCl2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O
